Halloween Prompt #2 Short Story

*Author’s note: Here’s a fun little short story I wrote last Halloween!

Day 3: prompt 2: Write a love story scene that began on a Halloween night five years ago:

I can vividly recall Halloween night five years ago: I met the love of my life at my cousin Patricia’s wedding. Who gets married on Halloween? I’d asked myself, completely against attending in the first place. Pressured by my family, though, I eventually caved, and agreed to attend. There I was trying to play the part of a lonely girl stag at a wedding; I even dressed in a beautiful, festive, orange dress, yet still felt invisible. I spent most of the night just sitting at a circular table alone, watching couples dance in the middle of the barn. My cousin always dreamed of having a fancy, expensive barn wedding. My uncle of course obliged, because anything my spoiled brat cousin wanted, she got.

After a few drinks, I continued surveying the barn for would-be suitors, yet none of them caught my eye. My cousin’s now husband’s friends all seemed like big Neanderthals – soaking up alcohol and cat calling any woman who walked past them. In need of some air, I decided to excuse myself from the proceedings, opting to go for a quick stroll outside. It was there that I first laid eyes upon him: he was taller than me, silently standing, staring out across the field. He wore an old looking hat that covered his eyes, but I could see that he had a sad face. I was initially hesitant to approach, resolving instead to simply observe from a far, but I was drawn to him: the voice inside my head egging me on. I walked over, placed my hand upon him, and finally made eye contact. The wind picked up at that moment, matching the increased beating of my heart. I was overcome with emotion–an overwhelming sense of whimsy–so I grabbed him, and dragged him off into the field, so that we were hidden amongst the stalks, where we laid in the grass.

He didn’t speak, opting instead just to listen to me. I laid atop his outstretched arm, telling him all about myself, feeling more open than I ever had before, completely spurred on by his lack of judgement. We lost track of time with one another out there in the field. We ignored the distant calls of my family members, who eventually came searching for me. Before they could discover us,  I texted my aunt, telling her that I had decided to head home. Upon uttering the lie, I decided that it was actually a good idea, and I invited him back to my place. He didn’t put up a fight at all, just maintained his sexy sense of stoicism. I could tell that he was ready to escape with me.

Jimbo and I have been together ever since. He is very low maintenance – only occasionally requiring to be restuffed…
